Sports romances are massively popular, and their star just keeps rising. One might assume that the Venn diagram of romance readers and sports fans has little overlap. But it makes sense when you think about the tropes inherent in the world of competitive sports: rivals-to-lovers, forced proximity, injuries, celebrity romance, maybe even a fake relationship for team publicity. Stakes are naturally high in a sports environment, as are emotions and heated physicality. You don’t have to be a sports fan to root for the home team in a swoon-worthy sports romance.

Now we’re talking! In a few short years, I’ve become an enthusiastic fan of women’s soccer, basketball, and hockey, and I’m dipping my toes in the waters of volleyball and rugby.
So when I saw the cover of Samantha Saldivar’s debut romance Play You For It, I immediately snatched it up, expecting a love story set amidst the world of women’s basketball.
