Vampire Romances for Spooky Season

via Vampire Romances for Spooky Season

Every fall, dark creatures take over our minds. Those who love the dark, cold nights of autumn long for the tender embrace of a blood-sucking creature of the night. Romance and vampirism have been intertwined since the beginning of the vampire genre. Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla and Bram Stoker’s Dracula both portrayed a deeply enticing, otherworldly figure who feeds on their companions. The undeniable erotic and romantic vibes continued on into beloved works like Interview with the Vampire. We’ve also just hit the 20th anniversary of Twilight–the cultural dominance of vampires is essentially undead.

Halloween isn’t really happening for me until I read, watch, or listen to a vampire story. Obviously, the undead can exist at any time of year, but something about the overcast days and dead plants really enhances the allure of the vampire. Here are a few exciting vampire romances to get your blood pumping.

the good vampire's guide to blood and boyfriends cover

The Good Vampire’s Guide to Blood and Boyfriends by Jamie D’Amato

College is hard enough without multiple near-death experiences. After attempting to take his own life, Brennan actually dies and is then brought back to the undead as a vampire. While he’s trying to figure out his new life, he makes friends with Cole, an unbelievably cute and inquisitive fellow student. The more Brennan finds out about existing New England vampires, the weirder things get. And Cole simply won’t leave his side.

When Marion Shaw takes a posting as a bloodmaid, all she really wants is to get out of the city. What she finds is a group of blood-suckers presided over by Countess Lisavet in the House of Hunger. Fang Fiction by Kate Stayman-London

Wanting to sink into your favorite fictional series is common, but it’s a little more complicated when you get drawn into a vampire feud. Tess happily leaves behind her life in New York to join the world of Blood Feud, but reality is way harsher than fantasy. Even as she’s falling for a vampire, old demons (metaphorical) come back to haunt her. The trouble that follows is getting back to the regular world while the Blood Feud universe becomes all the more dangerous.

carmilla cover

Carmilla: The First Vampire by Amy Chu, illustrated by Soo Lee, lettering by Sal Cipriano

This comic series brings the original Carmilla fable to 1990s New York. It’s about to be the year of the rat, and Athena is on a mission to find why other queer people keep disappearing. She finds a copy of the book Carmilla near a queer nightclub called Carmilla’s, and quickly gets drawn into the vampiric nightlife.

You never have to stop reading stories of the undead: get into more vampire romance, the best vampire novels of all time, and vampiric mysteries.
